1866-S $20 No Motto AU53 NGC
1866-S $20 No Motto AU53 NGC. The mintage estimate for the 1866-S No Motto double eagle ranges from 12,000 to 120,000 pieces. Regardless of this huge disparity in estimated production, the 1866-S No Motto is the rarest Type One twenty dollar except for the Paquet issue. It is usually seen in Very Fine to Extremely Fine condition. AU coins are rare, and Mint State pieces are virtually unknown.
Traces of luster reside in the recesses of this peach-gold AU53 example. A well executed strike brings out sharp definition on the reverse, while minor weakness is noted in some of Liberty's hair strands. The remaining obverse elements are much better defined than usual for the issue. Douglas Winter and Adam Crum, in their Type I Double Eagles book, allude to the strike variation on this date: "The obverse always shows a weaker strike than the reverse and may appear to be full grade lower in terms of sharpness." The expected number of bag marks are scattered over both sides.

Coin Engraver: James B.
