1866-S $20 No Motto AU50 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint
1866-S $20 No Motto AU50 PCGS. The San Francisco Mint was the only facility that coined No Motto double eagles in 1866, and this issue is noted as the last of its type and as a condition rarity. Garrett and Guth also note that the 1866-S No Motto is elusive in an absolute sense as well: "There are probably no more than 200 examples known in all grades." They further comment that "Extremely fine pieces are rare, and in About Uncirculated the issue is considered a major rarity."
This modestly worn wheat-gold example exhibits considerable peripheral luster. Well struck overall, though the periphery, particularly the lower left stars, display softness. Minor, even wear affects the surfaces, as do a number of scattered abrasions. Visually appealing for the grade and a highly desirable example of this often-difficult issue. Population: 11 in 50, 18 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
