1866-S $20 Motto MS61 NGC.
1866-S $20 Motto MS61 NGC.<p>The 1866-S is the only transitional date in the Liberty Head Double Eagle series. Two distinct types bearing this date are available to collectors. The 1907 is also a transitional date but is represented by two distinct design types. The 1866-S With Motto is the rarest Type Two Double Eagle from San Francisco in high grades. Between six and eight pieces are known in Uncirculated, only two or three of these grading better than MS60. The finest to be offered in many years was the PCGS MS61 Bass III: 825 coin that sold to a collector for $20,700. We offered an NGC MS61 in the 1999 ANA sale and it realized $12,075. This is one of the major condition rarities among the Type Two Double Eagles in the Eagle Collection and we expect that there will be a large number of interested bidders. For the grade, this is quite a nice coin. There is not even the slightest hint of friction on either side. The frosted surfaces are, however, interrupted by numerous small abrasions, but the only one worthy of singular mention being an angling mark across the crown of Liberty's head. Just a bit softly struck with light reddish patina overall. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
