<B>1866-S $20 Motto AU53 PCGS.</B></I> At the suggestion of Reverend M.R. Watkinson, Congress passed the Act of March 3, 1865, mandating that all silver and gold coins carry the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. To fulfill this requirement for the double eagle, James Barton Longacre enlarged the oval of stars above the eagle's head and inserted the motto within its outline. Like many early branch mint double eagles, this piece displays numerous moderate to heavy bagmarks. It also shows much luster and minimal highpoint wear.
