1866-S $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. A well struck coin with modest luster and warm orange-gold color. The surfaces are very pleasing, as they lack the luster grazes and bagmarks that are typically encountered. Only 38,960 Quarter Eagles were minted in 1866 in San Francisco, all of which went directly into circulation. Contemporary collectors could not afford to set one aside, and Mint State examples exist solely by chance. Population: 1 in 61, 0 finer (1/02). Ex: The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part Two (Bowers and Merena, 10/99), lot 547. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
