1866 S$1 Motto PR64 NGC. Both sides of this well
1866<S$1> Motto PR64 NGC. Both sides of this well preserved near-Gem are lightly patinated in soft golden shades. There is also some mottled cordovan-brown and a dusting of charcoal toning especially on the reverse. The fields reveal pleasing reflectivity at a few angles, there are no singularly mentionable contact marks. A fully struck survivor from an original proof mintage of 725 pieces, and always popular for first-year type purposes.
Reverse diagnostics include a die line touching the letters of N GOD within the motto, a similar line through the center of WE, a fragment of a line through the first T of TRUST. These were almost certainly guide lines for the engraver who was placing the letters within the confines of the ribbon. Another die line projecting up from the leftmost leaf up toward the eagle's wing is noted, and an unpolished area is noted between the bottom two arrowheads. Identifiable by a short lintmark on the top of Liberty's right arm and just touching her drapery.
