<B>1866<H10C> MS65 Prooflike NGC.</B></I> The present lot is the sole 1866 half dime certified as Prooflike by NGC. Indeed, the ice-white devices and strongly mirrored fields are suggestive of a proof, and the strike is razor-sharp as well. Fully brilliant and carefully preserved. Clash marks are noticeable on each side. Perhaps, the dies were removed after the clash occurred, then lapped and returned to service. Under this theory, the lapping imparted prooflike fields but failed to remove the prominent clashmarks. Only 10,000 business strikes (and 725 proofs) were struck.
