<B>1866 G$1 PR67 <img border='0' src='http://www.heritagecoins.com/images/star.gif' width=10 height=10> Ultra Cameo NGC.</B></I> Unlike dates from the 1880s, the 1866 has a very small mintage. Just 30 proofs were struck. Although many among the 7,100 business strikes exhibit reflective fields, these are readily distinguished. Breen states, "Proofs have tops of wreath joined; possibly 15 survive. ... Business strikes have tops of wreath separate, many with clash marks." This example has unimprovable deep cameo contrast, has no hint of cartwheel, features an intricate strike, lacks clash marks, and the tops of the wreath are joined, a characteristic of a deeply hubbed reverse die. The single finest NGC-certified proof 1866 gold dollar, as the other two PR67 pieces lack a Star designation.
