1866 G$1 MS68 PCGS. Although not quite as rare as the 1864 and 1865, the 1866 (7,100 business strikes produced) is anything but common in an absolute sense. Probably no more than 150 pieces were set aside and did not enter circulation. Judging by current population reports, the majority of Mint State survivors are clustered at the MS63-64 grade levels, which is what one would expect. This is one of only two such coins that have been certified. This piece was formerly in an NGC holder, as evidenced by the oval-shaped planchet lamination above the 1 in the denomination on the reverse--an unmistakable pedigree identifier. This is a true "wonder coin." The surfaces are pristine; in fact, we cannot find a single noticeable handling mark. A few other "as struck" features (predominantly clashmarks) are seen in the fields, and the fields reveal modest glowing tendencies under direct light. Richly frosted in finish with fully brought up features. Lot:7511
