1866 - Denver, J. W. Letter Regarding Child's Murder by Indians :
This letter, dated October 24th 1866, is written to Jas. W. Denver when he served as Governor of Kansas Territory, and is signed by Hugh S. Walsh, Secretary and acting governor of the Territory. In it he decries that, “If there is any case which ought to command redress I think this is one…” He then goes on to describe the murder of the child, and, “...before the mothers eyes…the child slain was cut around the waist and drawn over its head.” Walsh (1810-1877) was born and educated in New York, and arrived in Kansas in 1857. He was the private secretary for two governors—Stanton and Denver—and then in the spring of 1858 was appointed Secretary of the Territory. He retired from the secretary’s job in 1860 and took up farming with his son DeWitt until his death in 1877 [Ref: www.legendsofkansas.com/people-w.html].
