1866<5C> Shield Five Cents, Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.6, PR64 PCGS. Housed in an old PCGS green-label holder with the incorrect Judd-500 designation. The difference between J-500 and J-507 can be seen at a glance. Both varieties share the same No Rays reverse. J-500 has the date divided by the ball of the shield, while J-507 has the ball of the shield above the date, as on the regular issue coinage. This is actually an extremely important transitional issue. Both the obverse and the reverse are from the regular dies for the Shield Nickel production issue. Struck in Nickel with a plain edge. A Choice Proof example with deeply mirrored fields. The surfaces have pale nickel-gray color with hints of light gold toning. A splendid example despite a few faint hairlines on the reverse.
