<B>1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.5, PR62 PCGS.</B></I> The regular issue design for the Shield nickel without rays. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Several patterns for the Shield nickel design were created, including 1865 Rays and No Rays varieties, as well as this 1866 No Rays issue. All of these different issues were probably struck several years later, taking advantage of an active numismatic marketplace for such items. It seems that the Mint (or its employees) have been "coin dealers" since the 1840s when Matthew Stickney and others traded items to help supply the Mint's coin collection.
