1866 5C Rays PR66 Cameo PCGS. The 1866 With Rays proof
1866<5C> Rays PR66 Cameo PCGS. The 1866 With Rays proofs were produced to the extent of only 200 or so pieces, according to Guide Book estimates, although that figure seems low, considering the 592 "submission events" recorded in all proof grades at NGC and PCGS together. Regardless of the exact mintage figure, these coins are rare and quite in-demand as the first year of the type. This specimen offers frosty devices and excellent contrast with the deeply mirrored fields. A few of the rays are not well struck toward the center. This is an unsurprising phenomenon: In 1867, Chief Coiner Archibald Louden Snowden refused to coin proofs of the 1867 With Rays proofs, because he maintained that they would not strike up well. Population: 26 in 66 Cameo, 3 finer (8/06).
From The Della Collection.
