<B>1866 5C Rays PR65 PCGS.</B></I> Estimates for the proof mintage of 1866 Rays nickels vary widely. The 2007 <I>Guide Book</B></I> gives "600+," while David Bowers' <I>Shield and Liberty Head Nickels</B></I> suggests "800-1,200." Bowers states that: "Likely, proofs were restruck in later years as demand for them arose." Golden-gray patina covers both sides of this sharply struck Gem proof; excellent definition is noted on the star radials and the rays. A few tiny obverse flecks do not disturb.
