1866 5C Rays MS66 PCGS. The 1866 Shield nickel is in great demand as the first-year-of-issue, as well as for inclusion in type sets for the With Rays design. While examples are available in all grade ranges, quality can be a problem. David Bowers (2006) writes: "Most probably, the rarity of this date in MS66 grade is due more to overall lack of eye appeal than to actual wear." PCGS obviously thought, correctly, that this particular example exudes above-average eye appeal, thus was deserving of Premium Gem status. Indeed, the strike is uniformly strong, vibrant luster resides on nickel-gray surfaces imbued with wisps of light tan, and well preserved surfaces reveal no significant abrasions or unsightly spots. A few light die cracks exist on each side.
