1866 5C Rays MS65 PCGS. In spite of a generous mintage
1866<5C> Rays MS65 PCGS. In spite of a generous mintage in excess of 14 million pieces and a high number of survivors (PCGS reports that 112 pieces have been certified as MS65), the 1866 remains a popular and essential first-year type for collectors. This is a lustrous example that shows no mentionable post-striking impairments. That being said, this coin does display the three problems the Mint encountered when it first attempted to strike a large-sized nickel coin: irregularity of strike, die cracks, and several planchet flaws. These problems were largely alleviated in subsequent years, but they are almost unavoidable on 1866 coins.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
