1866 5C No Rays Shield Nickel, Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.7, PR66 Cameo NGC. The Judd-507 is a highly important transitional pattern that was struck later than the 1866 date. The obverse bears the regular Shield nickel design, while the reverse has the regular Without Rays design as adopted in 1867. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. www.uspatterns.com states that the reverse is believed to be the first No Rays die, distinguished by the stars above CENTS pointing between the E and N and between the T and S. All other No Rays reverse dies have the stars pointing to the E and T.
This piece offers considerable field-device contrast, with untroubled and untoned nickel-gray surfaces. The second 6 in the date is noticeably larger, perhaps 50%, than the first.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
