1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-482, Pollock-572, R.8, PR63 Brown NGC. A prohibitively rare Washington pattern. His bust faces right, the tiny date is placed in the exergue, and the motto GOD AND OUR COUNTRY spans the upper border. The reverse has a tall fancy numeral 5 in the center, encompassed by a laurel wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA dominates the reverse margin. Struck in copper with a plain edge. A sharply struck specimen with cherry-red patina that cedes to olive-brown toning on the open obverse field. A pair of small spots near the profile identifies the present piece, which also features three short lintmarks near the A in AND. Only one other example of Judd-482 is known; that piece, a cleaned proof, is identified in the Pollock reference with appearances in Kagin's, 7/79, lot 898; Kagin's, 1/81, lot 936; and Ivy, 8/82, lot 2851. The eighth edition of Judd states that the previous auction appearance for Judd-482 was Stack's 6/94, lot 1052. However, that piece was in fact Judd-468, misattributed by Stack's as Judd-482 (The Judd eighth edition plate for the Judd-468 obverse is incorrect). The opportunity provided by the current lot is exceptional, and it is an essential acquisition for the Washington specialist.
