1866 50C Motto PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS
1866 50C Motto PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. After IN GOD WE TRUST made its first appearance on circulating coinage in 1864, the push to include the motto on other, larger denominations continued. In 1866, the Mint incorporated IN GOD WE TRUST into the designs for seven denominations, the new five cent nickel, the three largest in silver, and the three largest in gold. On the quarter, half dollar, and silver dollar, the motto appears on a ribbon or scroll just above the eagle's head, a position echoed in the revised half eagle and eagle reverses. Both literally and figuratively, the motto is "well placed," as the design modification has provided a convenient dividing line for collectors of Seated halves, splitting the design's tenure of more than half a century into two more easily collectible series of roughly 25 years each.
This is an exquisite first-year specimen that makes even the most seasoned numismatist take notice, a one-of-a-kind beauty. In the PCGS Population Report, it is the only Superb Gem proof 1866 Motto half, the only Deep Cameo example for the issue, and one of just four Deep Cameo Superb Gems for the series, all of them of the With Motto variety (6/07).
Just as important as its technical preservation is the coin's undeniable visual appeal. Its carefully preserved surfaces are immaculate to the unaided eye. The fields shine beautifully through a thin veil of blue-green and violet patina with small pockets of gold-orange color at the rims, while the richly frosted, needle-sharp devices remain silver-white. Memorable proof Seated halves offered by Heritage, coins such as the 1867 NGC PR67 Ultra Cameo piece sold for $40,250 at the 2007 National Money Show and the 1867 PCGS PR66 Deep Cameo example from the 2005 FUN Auction which realized $35,650, set the high-water mark for the series, and this outstanding 1866 Motto piece easily ranks alongside them.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
