1866 25C PR68 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. The tragic bloodletting of the Civil War sparked a religious revival in the United States that would affect the Seated Quarter series only one year after Appomattox Courthouse. The Act of March 3, 1865 mandated the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to all silver and gold coins of sufficient size. The scroll upon which the motto resides was added to the reverse of the Seated Quarter by James Barton Longacre, the first coins displaying this feature being delivered in 1866. This is the single finest certified survivor of the initial proof Motto delivery of 725 coins (11/02). Untoned in the center, the obverse is ringed in reddish-orange and cobalt-blue shades. The reverse is equally as original with a blanket of rich antique-copper toning from rim to rim. Neither side of this fully impressed specimen reveals a single bothersome blemish. Pedigree concerns, however, do compel us to mention a small strike through (as produced) in the right reverse field below the final A in AMERICA.Ex: Orlando Sale (Superior, 8/1992), lot 316.From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
