1866 $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. The 1866 Liberty Head quarter eagle is a scarce coin in any grade, as the small mintage of 3,080 business strikes would suggest. In this regard, NGC and PCGS have seen only about 50 examples, ranging from Fine to Uncirculated. Mint State pieces are quite rare, with fewer than 10 such coins certified.
The MS60 example that we present here displays bright brass-gold surfaces that show the most potent luster in the areas around, and in the recesses of, the design elements. This issue is often poorly struck on the date and the central parts of both obverse and reverse. Not so on this coin--the date is bold, and only the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's leg feathers reveal minor softness. A scattering of minute handling marks are noted on each side.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
