1866<$2 1/2> AU53 PCGS. An unevenly struck example that has only a hint of rub on the devices and in the fields. Notable weakness is seen at the base of the eagle on the reverse. The surfaces are minimally unabraded, save for a few marks in the field behind Liberty's head. All Philadelphia Mint quarter eagles between 1863 and 1872 are great rarities. None of these issues has a mintage above 5,300 pieces. Gold coins generally did not circulate in most of the U.S. during this era as paper money traded at a discount to coin. Only 3,080 1866 quarter eagles were minted for circulation, only a few dozen of which have survived in any grade. The median grade appears to be AU50. Population: 3 in 53, 5 finer (5/06).
