First U.S. Nickel Coin With a face value of Five Cents-Struck from 1866 to 1883-Fine Condition. The Shield Nickel was the first nickel coin with a value of five cents to be released by the U.S. Mint for circulation. Produced from 1866 to 1883, this historic coin was struck only at the Philadelphia Mint. Its obverse features a shield with the cross of the Order of Calatrava (one of the first military orders) flanked by wreaths on both sides.
