1866 10C PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Ahwash-2. A tiny dot at the bottom of the obverse shield between stripes 6 and 7 is the most easily identifiable diagnostic of this die marriage. Both business strikes and proofs of Ahwash-2 are known to exist, few of the latter approaching, let alone attaining the technical grade of this impeccably preserved Superb Gem. Neither the obverse nor the reverse reveal a single distracting blemish, and both are fully struck throughout. Layers of gold, blue, lavender, and antique-copper toning blankets shimmering surfaces. One of only five 1866 Seated Dimes that has been designated PR67 by NGC and PCGS combined, this coin is surpassed by just two pieces at the former service (7/02). The importance of the 1866 date stems from the fact that, in this year, the Philadelphia Mint delivered only 8,000 business strike Dimes, survivors of which are rare in all grades. From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
