1866 $1 Motto PR63 PCGS. Breen-5476. In 1866 the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appeared for the first time on many U.S. denominations, including the silver dollar. Surprisingly, the 725 proofs recorded for this year were struck from three different die pairings. This pairing shows a centered date, with no sign of repunching on the 1, while the reverse shows minor hub doubling on GOD WE TRUST and a small tine of metal extends from the top side of the third leaf. Bowers notes that "this same die, possibly used for the final Proof mintages of 1866, was used to coin 1867 Proof dollars, and in later die states also the 1863-4-5 dollars with motto pattern novodels, listed in Judd ." Both sides are covered in deep orange-gold and iridescent blue patina, with a couple of undistracting contact marks in the right obverse field. Certified in a green-label holder.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
