Double Eagles 1865-s "Brother Jonathan" Coin #811. PCGS graded Mint State 62. Full frosty luster including all high points; sharp stars with full hair, coronet beads, and crisp eagle. Normal light bagmarks include a couple curved scratches on the cheek, a minor mark to the right of the eagle, and others less meaningful. This particular coin has a fine die crack extending through the first three stars on left and another from the rim intersecting the last and second to he last star (#12-13). Like the S. S. Central America shipwreck $20 gold pieces, the 1865-S coins from the "Brother Jonathan" tragedy are all marvelously frosty and deeply impressed by the dies. The hair is outstanding, while along the edge of Liberty's coronet can be found a sequence of little round beads that seldom show in any great detail on other, non-shipwreck Uncirculated coins. For the reverse, an eagle of incomparable beauty. Take a glass to it; magnify its intricate workmanship and then sit back and ponder with awe and reverence what it took to (a) engrave such a complex design and (b) to stamp it onto a blank disk of precious gold!
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
