1865-S $20 MS65 NGC. Ex: Brother Jonathan. This lovely tangerine-gold Gem is smooth aside from a mark beneath the eagle's left (facing) wing. Two lengthy die lines within the horizontal shield stripes add numismatic interest. 1865 was a disastrous year for gold coin transportation because of two shipwrecks, the S.S. Brother Jonathan and the S.S. Republic. Both contained a number of 1865-S double eagles, but the grade distributions were different. The S.S. Republic examples were typically between MS61 and MS63, while the Brother Jonathan pieces generally graded MS63 to MS65. NGC has certified only two S.S. Republic 1865-S twenties, while 47 were from the Brother Jonathan. NGC has certified nine unpedigreed examples, which most likely were broken-out resubmissions previously from Brother Jonathan holders. Census: 58 in 65, 8 finer (9/07).
Ex: S.S.
