1865-S $20 MS65 NGC.
1865-S $20 MS65 NGC. Ex: Brother Jonathan. Two legendary shipwrecks account for many of the No Motto Gem Double Eagles that survive today. The first was the S.S. Central America, which foundered in 1857, and the other numismatically important maritime disaster was the sinking of the S.S. Brother Jonathan. The latter vessel hit an uncharted rock during stormy seas and was pushed against it again and again by the waves. It sank the afternoon of July 30, 1865, just a few months after Lincoln's assassination. Eventually, 1,207 coins were recovered from the wreck, and the typical example was an 1865-S Double Eagle. However, Gems remain very scarce. A couple of the left side stars are somewhat flat, but the devices are otherwise sharp. The reverse has heavy die cracks (as made) that encircle the entire periphery, while the obverse die is in better shape and possesses only a couple of minor cracks. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
