1865-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Brother Jonathan. What 1857-S is to mid-date Type One double eagles in the wake of the S.S. Central America discovery, so the 1865-S has become to later Type One twenties. With a pair of shipwrecks, the S.S. Republic and the S.S. Brother Jonathan, both yielding Mint State examples, it has become one of the most readily collectible issues in Uncirculated states.
This slightly hazy orange-gold exemplar has the distinctive coloration of a Brother Jonathan coin, with streaks of richer peach at the upper obverse. Well struck with a slightly hazy appearance on the well-preserved obverse. On the reverse, a thin die crack laces through the reverse peripheral lettering. PCGS has graded just 23 finer examples (1/08).

Coin Engraver: James B.
