1865-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Brother Jonathan. The double eagle in this lot was just months old when the S.S. Brother Jonathan, a 220-foot side wheeler steamship, sank off of the California coast in July of 1865. Seemingly lost forever were 204 souls and a treasure that some believe was actually a Civil War Army payroll. Through the efforts of modern day treasure hunters, this and many other gold coins were liberated from their watery grave 131 years later, thus providing collectors with a previously rare opportunity of owning a high grade example of this Civil War era S-mint twenty. The surfaces display the frosted texture one would expect from a San Francisco product, and both sides are enveloped in deep reddish-gold color. Sharply struck throughout. PCGS has graded only 22 coins finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
