1865-S<$20> MS64 PCGS. A captivating Type One double eagle that is effulgent and supremely frosted, with tinges of reddish and peach-gold color over the obverse, and deeper orange-gold and rose toning on the reverse. Surface marks are limited to trivial signs of contact here and there, mainly in the fields. The San Francisco Mint used fourteen obverse and eight reverse dies to produce the 1.04 million pieces struck in this year. Of this issue, Walter Breen says: "Usually XF; UNCs are from a tiny hoard discovered about 1967." Since the publication of his Encyclopedia, however, numerous Mint State examples of this issue have emerged from the wrecks of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and the S.S. Republic.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
