1865-S $20 Liberty NGC MS63
Ex Brother Jonathan shipwreck group. This frosty, bold-struck $20 likely traces to the hoard of the Brother Jonathan shipwreck that was sold by Bowers and Merena Galleries a few years ago. It is one of the more attractive survivors we have seen, a coin the boasts sharp rims without bad blemishes other than a few scuffs and lines near the 4th star, and golden-bright luster whose glow and radiance is enjoyable to examine. There are a few small marks on Liberty's face, but nothing else that would require mentioning. On the contrary, the coin is decidedly choice in whatever way you choose to measure.

The Deep Sea Research group of entrepreneurs found and recovered 1,207 coins from the wreck of the Brother Jonathan, mostly in the form of 1865-S double eagles. Today, these are available in frosty Mint State grades. That source has also made a few Gem-quality examples available to collectors, although their number is currently limited to just around 25 pieces in MS-65 and several coins in MS-66. As such, the 1865-S, while not rare, is considered to be one of the most historic offerings available to American numismatists. (#8944)
