1865-S<$10> AU53 NGC. Perfect Date. So far, no 1865-S perfect date Liberty eagles have emerged from the wreck of the S.S. Republic (8/06). This may seem remarkable, given the fact that NGC has graded 243 1865-S double eagles from that now-famous shipwreck. However, the double eagle's mintage was in excess of one million pieces, while the eagle saw a paltry production of just 16,700 coins. While not particularly low compared to other S-mint issues of the same era, the obviously high attrition rate of these West Coast coins has left few survivors to serve as numismatic representatives. This green-gold example has a significant overlay of reddish patina. The striking details seem typical, with softness observed on the obverse stars and over the central devices. Moderate highpoint wear and a modicum of small abrasions imply the assigned grade level. An oval-shaped die lump on Liberty's cheek is apparently diagnostic of the issue. With so few examples surviving that rate finer than XF, this offering constitutes an important opportunity for the specialist.
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
