<B>1865 S$1 PR66 <img border='0' src='http://www.heritagecoins.com/images/star.gif' width=10 height=10> Ultra Cameo NGC.</B></I> The final year of No Motto Seated dollar production, 1865 was also the final year of the Civil War, and 1865 Seated dollars are desired on both counts. Many of the 46,500 business strikes produced this year were exported and subsequently melted, a fact that increases the importance of proof offerings. Only 500 proof examples were struck during the year, and in so high a grade <I>any</B></I> Seated dollar is a significant rarity--much more so the low-mintage 1865 issue.<BR> A perusal of the NGC and PCGS population reports shows a combined population for the 1865 proof issue of 372 pieces, a figure that comprises the inevitable multiple resubmissions. Of that number, 38 pieces are in PR66 or finer grade at both services. And of <I>those pieces,</B></I> there are only six PR67 coins, all at NGC. <I>The present example is the sole PR66 <img border='0' src='http://www.heritagecoins.com/images/star.gif' width=10 height=10> Ultra Cameo specimen at NGC, and there are no Ultra/Deep Cameo pieces graded finer at either service,</B></I> although there is a single PR66 Deep Cameo specimen at PCGS. Notwithstanding that technicality, it is extremely doubtful that another specimen could offer the aesthetic appeal presented here.<BR> This black-and-white Premium Gem has a lovely appearance that has earned it NGC's coveted Star designation, denoting exceptional eye appeal. Both sides are free of mentionable hairlines, and the deeply reflective fields sparkle at all angles with a completely brilliant appearance. The strike is sharp, as expected for the grade, with ultimate field-device contrast. If the foregoing were not enough, this coin has been preserved in what must be considered a miraculous state of preservation.
