1865<S$1> PR64 Cameo PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint produced 46,500 business strike Silver Dollars in 1865, most of which were exported and subsequently melted. A small part of the 500 proofs delivered this year probably met a similar fate, albeit within the Mint when they failed to sell to collectors. Those examples that did leave the Mint have survived at various levels of preservation, some of which are impaired. Today, the rarity of business strikes has placed further emphasis and demand on those Proofs that become available in the marketplace from time to time. This is an exceptionally well preserved representative of the date, with a razor-sharp strike. The glassy fields form a splendid backdrop to the frosty finished devices. Golden patina is seen on the devices, while a slight degree of hazy lilac color resides on the upper reverse. Although undoubtedly part of the strike, most of the letters on the reverse appear minutely doubled toward the border. Population: 11 in 64 Cameo, 6 finer in Cameo condition (9/05).
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
