1865<S$1> MS64 NGC. Like the 1862, 1863, and 1864, the 1865 is a low mintage (46,500 pieces) issue that is scarce to rare in all grades. Most examples were likely exported and subsequently melted. As in the preceding three years, the Mint most likely retained limited quantities of 1865 Seated Dollars until the late 1870s, when they were placed into domestic circulation. The destination of most Seated Dollars exported during the Civil War is still debated. The inability of the U.S. Silver Dollar to compete on the Oriental market seems to preclude China as the most likely destination for Seated Dollars of this era. Rather, and as suggested by Breen (1988), most examples probably found their way to Latin American ports. This prooflike near-Gem is untoned save for the lightest blush of lilac iridescence. The fields are characteristically striated, a feature that suggests extensive die polishing and explains the reflective qualities. Struck from dies with non-parallel alignment, the impression is soft over the upper right obverse and lower left reverse. An important coin for the advanced specialist.
