1865 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. By January 1865 the outcome of the Civil War appeared fairly certain. Successful Union blockades of key transport points caused shortages of food and other supplies in the South, and troops began deserting Confederate President Jefferson Davis' ranks. Desperate for reinforcements, Davis went so far as to approve the use of slaves in the Confederate military, a measure that never came to pass. Meanwhile, General Sherman and his troops marched through Georgia and the Carolinas, burning nearly everything in their path.
Although the mintage of 1865 gold dollars was a minuscule 3,725 examples--among the lowest of the entire Type Three series--numerous high-grade pieces are known today, along with similar numbers of the 1864 gold dollars. It appears as though some examples were saved--possibly as an affordable, yet historic reminder of the awful conflict the United States had endured for five long years?
The present 1865-dated coin is the single finest certified at NGC or PCGS of the 1865 issue. This is a stunning piece that should pique the interest of both Registry Set collectors as well as gold type enthusiasts, and its status as a Civil War-era issue only further adds to the enormous allure. The orange-gold surfaces are expectedly pristine, and there a considerable amount of lilac patina intermixed on each side. The fields also show some reflectivity and slight field-device contrast on both obverse and reverse, although insufficient for a Cameo designation.

Coin Engraver: James B.
