Scarce “Second Size” Andrew Johnson Indian Peace Medal

(1865-Dated) Andrew Johnson Indian Peace Medal. Struck at the United States Mint in Bronze. Second Size. By Anthony C. Paquet. Julian IP-41. Improperly Cleaned. NGC graded Uncirculated Details.

Julian IP-41. 62.9mm. Medium “Second Size.” This medal, dated 1865, it was struck somewhat later, using the new reverse design. This is an impressive medal that features the new reverse Engraved by Anthony Pacquet and struck at the United States Mint. The reverse of this medal was originally to have been made for Abraham Lincoln’s second term medal. When Lincoln was assassinated, the US Mint decided to use the reverse anyway on Andrew Johnson’s medal. The obverse has undraped bust right. The reverse features many American icons, including a pedestal bust of George Washington, a steam engine, plow, herd of buffalo, etc. This is a high grade, Uncirculated example, but it was cleaned long ago to show the underlying coppery color with some faint reddish hairlines present, now partially retoned, and attractive as such. Missing in most collections. This rare “Second Size” medal is handsomely housed in its special, 7.25” x 5.75” custom NGC Certification display type holder.
