<B>Confederate General Orders Naming Lee General In Chief,</B></I> Signed in print by Samuel Cooper, one page, 5" x 7.5", Richmond, February 6, 1865. Section 1 of this rare imprint states that "<I>The Congress of the Confederate States of America do enact, That there shall be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, an officer, who shall be known and designated as 'General in Chief,' who shall be ranking officer of the army, and as such, shall have command of the military forces of the Confederate States</B></I>". Robert E. Lee is named to the position in Part II of the Orders. This document carries the handstamp of the U.S. War Department's Rebel Archive.
