1865 Benjamin Butler Autograph Letter Signed
1865 Benjamin Butler Autograph Letter Signed “Butler”. One page, 5” x 8”, Willards MD , April 7, 1865, in ink, to H. A. Risley. In this letter written just two days before the South's final surrender at Appomattox Court House, Butler arranges a meeting with the unknown Mr. Risley and, as if to emphasize his recent sacking by General U. S. Grant, he writes in part: “As I am now a gentleman of entire leisure only let me know the time.” General Butler was relieved of command by Grant in December of 1864 after his inept performance against Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) may not have been much of a general but his skills as a lawyer more than made up for the fact and in the end, made him a wealthy man. The letter has several old crease marks present and there is an abrasion to the paper on the reverse side as a result of being mounted and removed from an album, else the letter is legible, bright, and in very good condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
