1865 50C Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-430, Pollock-503, High R.6, PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. The regular issue With Motto Seated Liberty half dollar design. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. For many years this pattern and the other With Motto pattern issues dated before 1866 have been called "transitional" pieces, but they are now considered restrikes, or more properly novodels. These pieces are still described as transitional patterns by Q. David Bowers as recently as his 2005 ninth edition of the Judd pattern book. While there is always the possibility that some of these were struck in 1865, this is unlikely. Necessary research requires careful examination of both dies with known proofs of the half dollar series. This is especially important for the reverse, which is covered with fine die polishing lines. These could be mapped and compared with regular issue proof coins in this series to identify the reverse die. Knowledge of the dates this reverse die was used for normal proofs of the series would give us an excellent clue to the production date of this pattern issue. The specimen that we offer here is a gorgeous Gem with substantial orange mint color and traces of olive, violet, and blue toning on both sides.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
