1865 50C PR66 PCGS. As a good number of the Philadelph
1865 50C PR66 PCGS. As a good number of the Philadelphia Mint's business strike half dollars of 1865 (511,400 pieces) met their fate in the melting pot, this issue is usually represented by one of the extant proof representatives, of which only 500 were minted. According to our records, over the past fifteen years, the major auction houses have offered only six specimens at the PR66 level, the grade of the example we offer here, and a mere five more that were graded higher. The PCGS and NGC population figures more or less reflect this, as these services combined have seen 19 Premium Gems, with seven finer (1/06).
The coin in this lot is exquisitely struck, with all of the design elements revealing razor-sharp definition. Each side is visited by waves of cobalt-blue and olive-gold patina, through which pronounced reflectivity shows in the fields. Excellent field to motif contrast is apparent over each side, rendering a nice cameo-like effect. The surfaces are virtually pristine, displaying no mentionable contact marks. Super eye appeal is seen throughout on this magnificent specimen.
