1865 50C MS66 PCGS. The 1865 half dollar started out with a mintage of 511,400 business strikes. Relatively few pieces are extant; PCGS and NGC have certified a total of about 100 examples in all grades, 60 of which are in Uncirculated grades. Some of these are "hoard" coins, as alluded to by Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert in their Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars: "A hoard of 15 pieces was released about 8 months prior to the 1980 ANA sale. Another hoard of approximately 20 Uncirculated coins of this date was supposedly released by a dealer just prior to the 1987 ANA."
Lustrous surfaces of this Premium Gem display dusky grayish-beige color on the obverse, which is joined by wisps of sky-blue on the reverse. The design elements are well defined, save for minor softness in some of the star centers. A couple of minor obverse luster grazes and contact marks preclude an even higher grade. Population: 3 in 66, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
