1865 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, Judd-446, Pollock-518, High R.6, PR65 Brown NGC. The obverse is of the regular die, while the reverse is similar to the regular issue of 1865 except for a scroll above the eagle reading IN GOD WE TRUST. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The fields are deeply reflective, their mirrored reflectivity flashing forcefully through the deep brown color and aquamarine toning that covers each side. Somewhat more than a dozen examples of this variety are known in copper, while just two gold impressions have been identified. These are believed to be back-dated pattern issues, or novodels, struck circa 1869. Auction sales data exists for most pattern issues to virtually the time they were issued. It was not unusual for a given pattern to appear in an auction the same year it was coined, or the following year in some cases. These 1865 Liberty half eagle patterns did not appear for sale until late 1869 or early 1870, thus helping to establish the time of production.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
