1865 3CN PR66 Cameo PCGS. Repunched Date. B. 2-B. Whereas the business strike 1865 is perhaps the most common date in the Three Cent Nickel series, its similarly dated specimen counterpart is the rarest of the proofs. Congress authorized this denomination with the Act of March 3, 1865, whereby the initial specimens produced were delivered too late to be included in the year's proof sets. We do not know exactly how many proof 1865 Three Cent Nickels the Philadelphia Mint originally prepared, but the total is probably no lower than 500 pieces. Survivors are scarce, particularly at the finer levels of preservation. Smooth from rim to rim with no distracting contact marks to report, this well contrasted Gem is bathed in champagne and lilac iridescence. A few trivial carbon flecks are noted in the fields, none of which are out of context with the PR66 designation. Population: 5 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (10/02).
