1865 $3 AU58 NGC. With a nominal mintage of 1,140 pieces struck against the backdrop of the Civil War, it is a wonder that any three dollar gold pieces of 1865 ever circulated. Yet more certified examples are worn than not, and in AU58 and better, the issue is a borderline condition rarity. This noteworthy near-Mint representative offers mildly reflective fields, their luster consistent with this issue's tiny mintage, along with solidly struck devices that display only a hint of friction. The yellow-orange and honey-gold surfaces have a handful of scattered marks, but these have only minimal impact on the overall eye appeal. An attractive example that has the eye appeal to rival a lower Mint State piece. Census: 17 in 58, 20 finer (7/07).
From The DAX Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
