1865<$20>--Date in Rim--MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. MPD-002. Traces of date digits are obvious within the dentils beneath the date. Q. David Bowers states in his 2004 reference A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins that these traces represent the "bottoms of 18 of logotype (inverted position)." The S.S. Republic sank on October 18, 1865, and its recovered cargo included a number of 1865 double eagles. These were formerly prohibitively rare in better Mint State grades. This lustrous and exquisitely struck near-Gem features dazzling cartwheel luster. The smooth, untoned surfaces show no indication that the coin spent more than a century at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. A minor strike-through of mint origin is detected beneath the A in STATES, but the preservation is exemplary.
