<B>1865 $10 AU55 Prooflike NGC.</B></I> There are no proof-only dates within the Liberty eagle series, unlike the other gold denominations from the second half of the 19th century. But mintages were minimal between 1862 and 1873, since unbacked Federal paper money (and Gresham's law) forced gold coins out of circulation except on the West Coast. This moderately abraded representative is from a low mintage of 3,980 pieces. Prooflike luster dominates the borders, and only a typical strike in the centers removes the piece from consideration as a briefly circulated proof.
