1865 $10 AU53 NGC. Final date of the No Motto eagles struck at the principal mint in Philadelphia. Numerous, scattered but fairly small abrasions are seen on both sides, over brilliant surfaces that must, originally, have been fairly prooflike, because an intense brilliance remains beneath the marks. The strike is also quite strong, with the stars all well detailed down to their centers, and the eagle, with all its feathers distinct, is exceptional. The edges are remarkably free from abuse. In this final year of the Civil War, the mint at Philadelphia produced one of the rarest of its issues when it struck just 3,980 eagles--no doubt in the space of a few hours' time, possibly in a single day. Curiously, a number of them survived, note Garrett and Guth in their fascinating Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, then admit that most of those are in lower grades. The Smithsonian's specimen is about the same grade as this one, so owning this piece would place its high bidder in good company indeed.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
