<B>1865 $1 PR66 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The excessively rare and likely clandestine 1866 specimens notwithstanding, the 1865 silver dollar proofs are the last of the No Motto type for that denomination. The mintage of 500 pieces, like the production figures from 1862 on, shows a steep drop from the highs encountered in 1860 and 1861, which both boasted four-figure mintages for their respective proof issues.<BR> This pleasingly preserved and elegant survivor offers exceptional visual appeal. Though thin silver-gray haze drapes much of the fields, considerable reflectivity shines through, and the contrast with the moderately frosted devices is prominent and undeniable. Subtle golden toning visits the margins, and a tiny lintmark to the left of Liberty's arm can serve as a pedigree marker. A delightful and important survivor.
